ASA, Leadership Allen Class XIX bring child abuse prevention program to Allen Nearly 1 million children are victims of abuse and neglect every year, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Experts estimate the one-in-four girls and one-in-six boys are sexually abused before the age of 19. More than 90 percent of all child abuse victims know their abuser. To help combat these staggering statistics, the Allen Sports Association (ASA) and Leadership Allen Class XIX are teaming up to bring the nationally recognized child abuse prevention program Stewards of Children to Allen on May 22. The Stewards of Children program is designed for organizations that serve children and any/all adults interested in protecting children. The program curriculum focuses on the issues surrounding child abuse and how it affects the community. Training participants learn how to spot the signs of abuse, how to respond correctly if they have a suspicion that a child is being abused, and how to act as a community guardian to ensure that agencies have appropriate policies and procedures in place to protect children in their care. The program was developed by Darkness to Light, a national non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the incidence of child sexual abuse by shifting the responsibility from chidlren to adults. "Every child should have an opportunity to safely participate in community recreational activities," said Ken Geest, ASA Executive Director. "By enabling the adults in our community to become more knowledgeable about child abuse, ASA and Leadership Allen are helping to protect children from future victimization and will hopefully make an impact in reducing the prevalence of this widespread problem." To reserve your spot at the upcoming training session on May 22 please call (972) 727-9565. Allen Neighbors, DMN, April 19 - Written by Amy Plate, Special Contributor |
